Here Be Tygers will Teach, Entertain & Guide Storytellers of All Kinds

I had a chance to sit down and talk with Jay Dragon, the developer of Wanderhome, a few days ago. It’s a game about journeys: the ones that we take, the ones we’re afraid to, and the places we call home.

And it made me think of my own. A few years ago, I decided to share what creating a story is like — as it’s told. A new friend of mine, fantakoi, had just established their Patreon, and there were a few other Creators — podcast hosts, entertainers, illustrators — that I followed. So I set out to see what kind of shape mine would grow.

When I say “I’m a storyteller…”, that may sound like the start of a long conversation, but in truth it was the end of a much older one first — one that bore many titles, a good deal of pain, and time enough for some truths to show.

We like to ask, “what do you do?” to folks we’ve just met or still barely know. It helps us understand their “why?”: what makes them get up at morning or night; feed the dog, cat or child; gives them clarity, purpose, and drive.

Right now, as I write, I’m sitting outside watching bumblebees, which is as much for research as it is for my health — you can’t describe the world unless you spend some of your time in it. But it does make me think of this place, my home (and yours I hope), and what I’d like to provide.

A New Road

As it says in our mission and title above, Here Be Tygers will teach, entertain and guide storytellers of all kinds. Of all shapes and ways, and wherever you’re at in life.

So this will still be your campfire. Your place to share stories. To learn how they’re made. How they change to survive. And then, when they’re ready, when you’re ready, to take them back to the tribe.

What will that look like?

First, we’re going to open the Discord to all Patrons. It’s a home. It’s a place. It’s somewhere safe. And it’s where we go to plan, create and revise.

We’ll also relaunch the tiers so that everything falls under Teach, Entertain or Guide, with content we can create each month at around the same time.

This will allow us to delve a bit deeper into the creative process itself and solutions that will help you find your tale, make it come to life and bring it back to your tribe.

The new Entertain Tier

Starting next month, the new Entertain tier ($5+/mo) will consist of interviews with Creator and storytellers of all kinds, features or play tests of the things that they make, and our thoughts, reflections and insights on how you can use them in the tales that you write.

Patrons at the this tier will be able to make suggestions for future episodes, participate in games, engage with Creators, and may receive early access or exclusive offers to featured content and creations.

As for Teach and Guide, we’ll go into deeper detail on those next time.

Stay safe and well.
